NINETY-FOUR

A serialized novel. Thirty episodes.

THE PREMISE

Mara Salcedo has spent fifteen years at the Social Security Administration's program service center in Kansas City doing post-payment integrity work. She notices when numbers don't match. In October, she notices ninety-four people present in a validation dataset who are not present in the same dataset the following day. The discrepancy resolves correctly. The audit trail is clean. The export she ran herself, on her own credentials, tells a different story.

Ninety-Four is the first book in a planned series of three. Mara does not solve it in this book.

THE OPENING PASSAGE

I'm going to tell you about a Tuesday. The export came back with ninety-four people in it that shouldn't have been there — or rather, that were there Tuesday and gone Wednesday, which the database treats as a sync lag and I treat differently. Ninety-four sits in the middle of a decade's worth of data I've worked with. I know its shape the way I know the stretch of 12th Street where the light always takes longer than it should. I wrote it down before I knew I was keeping notes.
